Incident Report: September 11, 2025 – Confrontation Involving CSULB Science Lab Supervisor Brent Scheiwe at Channel Point Apartments

On September 11, 2025, at approximately 4:45 p.m., a confrontation occurred at Channel Point Apartments, located at 5926 Bixby Village Drive in Long Beach, California. The property is managed by Greystar, and several staff members—including Property Manager Kathy Scheiwe—live on-site. The incident involved Kathy’s husband, Brent Scheiwe, a Science Lab Supervisor at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and affiliate of the SEA Lab program.

Background and Context

The African-American resident involved had previously filed multiple discrimination and civil-rights complaints against Property Manager Kathy Scheiwe. At the time of the incident, the resident reported that he was simply walking on the property and had not spoken to anyone immediately beforehand.

Racist Conduct, “Jim Crow”–Style Directive, and Mocking Behavior

According to resident accounts and video evidence, Brent Scheiwe confronted the disabled African-American resident after reportedly being alerted by his wife, Property Manager Kathy Scheiwe. At the time, the resident was simply walking to the mailroom to check for an important Medicare letter related to his disability application.

The resident explained he had lived at Channel Point for two years and had never seen Brent before, saying he did not know who Brent was, how Brent knew him, or why he showed such sudden hostility. The only prior interaction was that the resident had filed a complaint with the California Civil Rights Department against Kathy in March—six months earlier—and had zero contact with either of them afterward. The resident believes this confrontation was retaliation for filing that civil rights complaint.

“You’re Going to Jail, Boy — You’re Going to Jail!”

Witnesses reported that Brent recorded the resident, mocked him with loud vocalizations, and used exaggerated gestures clearly meant to intimidate him. Several witnesses also stated that Brent yelled, “You’re going to jail, boy — you’re going to jail!” in a hostile and racially charged manner.

Others reported that Brent attempted to enforce a “Jim Crow–style” directive, telling the resident not to use the main entrance and instead use back or side entrances—an unlawful, discriminatory practice prohibited by the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Residents noted that similar unequal treatment had occurred before, with African-American tenants sometimes directed to use side or rear entrances while non-Black residents used the main doors freely.

Resident’s Warning About a Restraining Order and CNN Exposure

During the confrontation, the resident repeatedly told Brent to stop recording him and warned that if the harassment continued, he would file a restraining order. The resident also stated that this kind of racially charged behavior “was going to end up on CNN” because of the national attention similar discrimination cases have received.

According to witnesses, Brent mocked the warning instead of stopping his behavior. He reportedly:

  • Laughed to himself,
  • Threw his head back and howled toward the sky,
  • Continued recording and taunting the resident,
  • And said directly to him:
“If you could get me on CNN, you wouldn’t be living here.”

Residents described this statement as a further insult, power play, and veiled threat, implying that the African-American resident’s housing status—and possibly his safety—was dependent on not challenging the Scheiwe family publicly.

Refusal to Identify Himself

Throughout the incident, the resident repeatedly asked Brent to identify himself. Brent refused. His identity was later confirmed through public CSULB and SEA Lab listings, as well as his connection to Property Manager Kathy Scheiwe.

Escalation and Police Response

Physical contact was reportedly made during the encounter. Brent Scheiwe subsequently contacted 911 to report misconduct by the resident. Responding officers documented the scene and referred the matter for further investigation by Detective Wiebe-Bailey of the Long Beach Police Department.

CSULB Connection and Conflict of Interest Concerns

Channel Point Apartments is listed as an off-campus housing option for CSULB students. Residents expressed concerns about a potential conflict of interest, given Brent Scheiwe’s employment with the university and his wife’s managerial position—especially when their actions involve police, retaliation, or racially charged confrontations against a tenant who had filed civil-rights complaints.

Nebraska Roots and Historical Context

Brent and Kathy Scheiwe previously lived in Nebraska—a state with a documented history of segregation through redlining, racially restricted neighborhoods, segregated schools, and exclusionary public-space practices. Though less publicly discussed than Southern Jim Crow, Nebraska maintained a racial hierarchy that shaped social norms and attitudes for decades. Residents questioned whether these influences played a role in the conduct seen on September 11.

Civil Rights Complaints and Ongoing Investigation

The resident had already filed multiple complaints with the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) alleging discrimination, harassment, and retaliation by property management. Additional African-American residents have reported similar patterns of mistreatment. CRD’s investigation remains active.
