Incident Report: September 11, 2025 – Confrontation Involving CSULB Science Lab Supervisor at Channel Point Apartments
On September 11, 2025, at approximately 4:45 p.m., an incident occurred at Channel Point Apartments, located at 5926 Bixby Village Drive in Long Beach, California. The property is managed by Greystar, and several staff members, including Property Manager Kathy Scheiwe, reside on-site.
According to resident accounts, video documentation, and witness statements, Kathy Scheiwe’s husband, Brent Scheiwe—a Science Lab Supervisor at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and an affiliate of the SEA Lab program—arrived at the property and engaged in a confrontation with a disabled African-American resident.
The resident reports that prior to this incident, he had filed multiple complaints with property management regarding alleged discriminatory treatment by Property Manager Kathy Scheiwe. On the day of the incident, the resident states that he was simply walking on the property and had not spoken to anyone immediately before being confronted.
According to the resident, Mr. Scheiwe located him on the property after being contacted by Property Manager Kathy Scheiwe, and then approached him directly. Witnesses report that Mr. Scheiwe recorded the resident while making loud vocalizations and gestures that the resident perceived as taunting and intimidating. According to the resident and multiple witnesses, Mr. Scheiwe also made racially charged comments during the encounter.
The resident stated that he asked Mr. Scheiwe several times to stop recording and warned that he would seek a restraining order if the behavior continued. According to the resident, this warning was ignored and the conduct continued.
Residents further report concerns that, prior to the September 11 incident, African-American residents were directed by management to use the back or side entrances to access the building’s mailroom, rather than the main entrance commonly used by other residents.
Practices requiring African Americans to use separate entrances were outlawed under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits racially discriminatory access to housing and public accommodations.
Mr. Scheiwe declined to identify himself when asked. His identity was later confirmed through an investigation of publicly available records.
According to information published by California State University, Long Beach, Channel Point Apartments participates as an off-campus housing option for CSULB students. This connection has raised concerns among some residents regarding a potential conflict of interest, given Mr. Scheiwe’s role as a university employee and his wife’s position as the property’s manager.
Physical contact reportedly occurred during the encounter. Mr. Scheiwe later contacted 911 alleging misconduct by the resident. Responding officers documented the incident and referred the case to Detective Wiebe-Bailey of the Long Beach Police Department for further review.
Prior to this incident, the resident had submitted multiple complaints to the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) alleging discriminatory treatment and retaliation by property management. Additional African-American residents have reported comparable issues. The CRD continues to actively investigate these matters.
